Other Notable Sussex Parks and Gardens

Where a local authority receives a planning application affecting a park or garden that is included in the English Heritage Register (see Registered Sussex Parks and Gardens), the Registration is a ‘material consideration’ in the planning process, meaning that planning authorities must consider the impact of any proposed development on the landscape's special character.

However, while this provides a degree of protection for the most important sites, there are many more sites that are important to our heritage, even though they aren't registered. When proposed developments affect these sites there is a real threat to our heritage - which may not even be appreciated. It is here that SGT has a major role to play by:

• • Helping Sussex local authorities develop their own "Local Lists" so that conservation issues are recognised
  • Commenting on planning applications - see the Conservation section of this web site
  • Researching Sussex sites so information is available to any interested party

The table below provides a more complete list of Sussex Parks and Gardens. Some of these sites are included on the English Heritage Register, but most are not. However for many more information is is available on the Parks and Gardens web site which can be accessed by clicking the hyperlink.

In many cases this information has been provided by SGT research volunteers. For sites where there is no hyperlink, the Trust’s research material may be available in hard copy format.
