Sussex Parks & Gardens included on the National Heritage List for England

Historic parks and gardens, perhaps more so than buildings, are a fragile and finite resource: they can easily be damaged beyond repair or lost forever. In order to identify those sites which are of particular historic importance, to raise awareness of their value with owners and managers and to safeguard their key features if change is contemplated, English Heritage is enabled by government to compile the Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in England (the Register may be accessed here (HistoricEngland Registered Parks and Gardens). Today this Register contains the record of around 1600 sites, more than 70 of which are in Sussex.

The emphasis of the Register is on designed landscapes; it is concerned with the more permanent elements such as landform, built structures, walks and rides, water features, structural shrubberies, hedges and trees. It does not focus on the ephemeral, shorter-lived plantings of herbaceous perennials, annuals, roses, and most shrubs. Sites comprise landscape parks and gardens, and other planned open spaces such as town squares, public parks, cemeteries and hospital grounds. Sussex has sites in all categories.

Access to registered sites

The emphasis of the Register is on gardens, grounds and other planned open spaces, such as town squares. The majority of sites registered are, or started life as, the grounds of private houses, but public parks and cemeteries form important categories. Even hospital landscapes and two pumping stations are included, because they have skilfully-planned surroundings reflecting the landscaping fashions of their day. The emphasis of the Register is on 'designed' landscapes, rather than on planting or botanical importance.

Registered sites are NOT open to the public unless advertised elsewhere as being so.
